What's the worst experience you've had with a guy there? In the two years I was there, only one of the girls was ever touched. A guy grabbed her butt and he got thrown out. What were the relationships with your colleagues like? My overall experience was phenomenal. I'm still friends with the girls that I worked with even though I haven't been there in over a year. I help them out with their businesses, and some of the women I worked with are some of the smartest women I've ever met.
The [perception] about Hooters girls being dumb — it's not true. There is cattiness, sure, but overall I had a great experience. How was the money compared to a more standard restaurant? I don't think the money was any better than anywhere else. I know some girls make more than that, but some made less. I don't think the money is a motivator for the job. So why were you drawn to it?
I stayed because I had a lot of fun. I enjoyed the women who I worked with. I had really cool regulars that I got to see every shift and most customers weren't that bad.
They were just normal. So what do you think about the results of the study? I absolutely loved my experience and couldn't disagree more with the study's findings. All the girls I worked with, myself included, worked there because it was fun.
I never felt degraded; quite the opposite actually. I felt empowered while working there. I was able to take control of my sexuality and my body and use it to be seen how I wanted it to be seen. I feel much more degraded on the street where men gawk at women wearing normal street clothes and make you feel like you're on display for them. You have no control in those situations.
When I put on my uniform, I was able to take control of that image and own my own sexuality. Overall, I loved my experience at Hooters. It taught me to own my own sexuality, allowed me to break out of my shell, and introduced me to some of the smartest, most amazing women that I am proud to call friends even after I left the job. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
