Although officially named after Joseph Butterworth, treasurer of the Wesleyan Missionary Society, Xhosa locals affectionately refer to the town as Gcuwa. Butterworth saw much fighting during the Frontier Wars, and today it is an important industrial and commercial centre and the gateway to the southern-most resorts of the Wild Coast.

Two sites in Butterworth that are well worth visiting are two nearby waterfalls namely the tumbling cascades of Gcuwa Falls and the impressive m drop at Bowa Falls, which is also believed to have been a place of executions. Butterworth is historically significant to SA, but it is not really a tourist destination.
